If you're considering using gabion baskets to build a wall or fence on your property - you may be wondering if they're worth the fanfare? If you'd like to learn more about the pros and cons of gabions, hopefully this article has taught you more so you can become more familiar with the process of installing gabions and whether it's worth it.

Soil erosion is a common problem in rural and urban areas. If left unchecked, it can lead to topsoil erosion, which is vital for planting and vegetation growth. One of the most effective methods of controlling soil erosion is the use of gabion walls.

What is a gabion wall?

Derived from the Italian word for 'cage', gabions are wire containers that can hold any inorganic material. They can form flexible, permeable structures that are excellent for stabilising shorelines against erosion.

Originally these cages were made of wicker and were often used for civil engineering and military purposes. Leonardo da Vinci even used gabions to lay the foundations for the castle of San Marco in Milan.

A gabion should not be confused with a fort, which is a gabion usually lined with a geotextile that allows it to be filled with a granular soil fill rather than rock.

What is their purpose?

The main construction of gabion walls is to gently slow down runoff as they screen the soil they carry. They are also used to alleviate seepage problems on slopes. This mainly occurs on loose soils. They can also be used in areas where there are soil and water problems, where land conditions, water velocity, water turbulence and the expected vegetation cover may be set in such a way as to erode the soil under design flow conditions.

Gabions also play a pivotal role in road construction. Gabion walls can stabilise roads in road construction, mainly when building roads on slopes.

The history of gabions

Gabion walls date back 7,000 years, when the Egyptians used them to control the flooding of the Nile. They wove gabion baskets of reeds, filled them with small stones and arranged them along the Nile. The result was a dramatic reduction in river erosion and the prevention of run-off floods that destroyed crops during the rainy season.

Advantages of gabion walls

The biggest advantages of gabion walls are that they are economical, require little maintenance, are easy to install and very durable, and can be created fairly quickly.

The cost of the wall depends on the wire used, as there are various grades and sizes of wire mesh available, but they are usually galvanised. Another factor that determines the cost is the filling material used.

Corner stones are the best filler for gabions as they lock together and provide a fixed unit. Round river stones can be used as a filler material to help them retain their shape.
